U.S. Women’s Hockey: Knight, Keller, and Frankel Win Gold Medal

We move on to the Gold Medal match in Women’s Hockey as the United States takes on Canada for a second time in this tournament. Despite it being a blowout victory for the United States last time, this match figures to be different this time. This is because Marie-Philip Poulin of Canada who is widely considered to be the best female hockey player in the world, is playing today. She did not play against the United States last time due to injury.

The stands are packed, and the atmosphere is tense as we are underway in the first period.

Frankel is in net for the United States.

United States had to be on the penalty kill 5 minutes into the game. Sloppy mistake by the United States that cannot happen during the Gold Medal game as it was for too many players on the ice. Thankfully, the United States was able to kill it off, so it was of no consequence.

The United States commits another penalty in this game after being call for tripping. They have to be on the penalty kill again. The United States kills off the penalty again.

Canada commits hooking against the United States. The US will be on the power play.

The first period comes to an end. This is by far the worst first period the US has had throughout the tournament as they are being outshot by Canada at the end of the period. However, the United States will be on the power play when the 2nd period begins, and we will see if they can take advantage of this.

The United States does uncharacteristically bad defense and miscommunication which results in Canada scoring a short-handed goal to make it 1-0. The US continues to struggle by making sloppy mistakes.

At the end of the 2nd period, it is 1-0 Canada. There needs to be a sense of urgency for the United States heading into this potential last period of the Olympics for them.

The United States is getting frustrated in the 3rd period as they commit a boarding penalty. They are very lucky this was not a 5-minute major as the game would be over for them. Time is running out for this team.

The goalie has been pulled for the United States as the US resorts to desperation tactics.

Megan Keller, alumnus of Boston College, scores to win the Gold Medal for the United States! After playing sloppy for most of the game, the United States does a fantastic comeback thanks to Hilary Knight in her final Olympics scores with 2:04 left of regulation and Megan Keller scoring thanks to her puck handling. First gold medal since 2018 for the United States.

After Day 13, the United States has 27 medals (9 gold, 12 silver, and 6 bronze).
