Gil, Paraguay shocks Underwhelming Germany in Penalty kicks
Germany and Paraguay met in a Round of 32 match in Boston Stadium. The Group Stage no longer matters. It was win or go home. The crowd was 50/50 for both teams. Germany dominated the match early on as they control possession. However, they were unable to capitalize in turning their possession of the ball into goals. As a result of the German inability to score goals, Paraguay shocked their opponents by letting Julio Enciso convert a header and scored in the 42nd minute to make it 1-0 Paraguay. They would retain that lead at halftime.
Germany would regain the momentum as Kai Havertz scored in the 54th minute to level the game at 1-1. This is what Germany was looking for coming out of halftime. The match would remain undecided in normal regulation time. Extra time would be needed to decide the victor. The performance by Germany was underwhelming given that they dominated the possession throughout the match at the end of regulation.
Germany’s Jonathan Tah thought he had a goal in extra time. However, his teammate shoved the goalkeeper to the ground during the play. As a result, VAR would overturn the goal. Extra time would not be enough and the match had to go into penalty kicks. The goalkeepers are Manuel Neuer for Germany and Orlando Gil for Paraguay.
After penalty kicks, Paraguay scored the final kick to make it 4-3 and wins the match!
German fans leave the World Cup heartbroken.
